A valley carries a concentrated flow of rainwater and is one of the most important junctions on a pitched roof. Debris, worn valley lining, displaced tiles or slates, and failing mortar or flashing can all lead to water ingress. We inspect the valley length and adjacent roof coverings to establish the extent of the issue.
Roof valley work for slate and tiled roofs
Depending on the roof, a valley may use lead, a proprietary valley trough, or a formed open channel beneath cut slates or tiles. The detail needs to suit the roof pitch, covering type and the expected water flow. We check the supporting battens and underlay around the junction as part of the repair scope.
What the work involves
Where possible, we repair a local defect; where the lining or support has failed over a longer run, we can renew the valley and reinstate the surrounding slates or tiles. Careful set-out, weathering and clear discharge at the eaves help protect the junction long term.
Every roof is assessed on its own condition, structure, access and exposure. Before we start, we explain the likely cause or proposed specification, the work involved and any limitations we can see. If a roof needs a wider repair than first expected, we discuss it with you before proceeding.
Roofing materials and details
Natural & fibre-cement slate
Slate roofs need correctly sized slates, sound fixings and careful detailing around ridges, valleys and abutments. Repair and renewal methods are chosen to suit the existing roof.
Clay & concrete tiles
Profile, pitch and interlock all affect the repair. We check for cracked or displaced tiles, failing ridge details and junctions that may admit wind-driven rain.
Flat roof systems
Felt, GRP and single-ply coverings each use different detailing and repair materials. We identify the system first and discuss a compatible solution.
